COOKING LIKE A THAI LOCAL – THAI COOKING CLASS WITH BACKSTREET ACADEMY 2018
As many of you may already know, we are now Backstreet Academy Ambassadors! We couldn’t be prouder to be advertising and exposing such an incredible service to our friends, family, and readers since we are passionate about what they stand for.
We absolutely LOVE the idea of learning genuine skills from genuine locals but it is hard, if not impossible to find an experience not overtaken by mass tourism. We often find ourselves in an overcrowded class, missing out on that one-on-one learning and often leave feeling like it was more put on for show rather than an authentic attraction.
That was absolutely NOT the case with this Thai Cooking Class we experienced through Backstreet Academy.
Aek and Nok were the most genuine, professional, kind and caring hosts who consistently aimed to help us cook their traditional dishes. We were picked up in the morning around 8:30 am in a tidy pick up truck most travelers will be familiar with and met the other lovely couple joining us on this class. Once we arrived at the market Nok was readily prepared with handmade baskets, a list of cooking options to choose from, pens, and a friendly smile to guide us through all of the local produce while giving us a thorough understanding of each ingredient we would be using. He answered every question, offered us to smell and sometimes taste the local produce to ensure we had a deep understanding.
We then took a short ride with our ingredients back to his home where his beautiful wife Aek was waiting for us to begin. We were first ushered to the cleaning station to wash our hands then back to our cooking spots. After an introduction about ourselves/meet and greet they ran through the procedure for our class and what we would be cooking before showing us to the table where snacks had already been prepared to get us started. Much needed freezing cold bottles of water were consistently brought to the table to refresh us.
Luckily they provided a vegan/vegetarian option for each dish so we were more than happy to indulge in every meal! Throughout our class, we each mostly cooked different foods in order to learn a variety of dishes from each other and taste the local homemade flavours. We each chose six dishes to cook, a stir fry, appetizer, soup, curry paste, curry AND mango sticky rice. YUM.
Most importantly all of these ingredients were fresh, local and handled with care throughout the whole process. After cooking each dish, we then sat down together and enjoyed it while it was hot.
I mean, we have always loved cooking and we wouldn’t hesitate to say we're not to bad at it but what we made on this day doesn’t even compare to what we used to create back home. The food was to die for! Every dish was flavorsome and you’d be lucky to even see a crumb left on our plates! They were quite surprised to see as a group we managed to finish almost every single dish, even though they do provide containers so you can take home leftovers if need be.
I can certainly tell you that we did not need dinner that day!
All in all this experience left us feeling refreshed and excited to have finally come across such an authentic, kind and skilled local couple that were eager to share their knowledge with us. So much so that we left with a fully detailed cookbook to take home with us and a group photo to treasure. We couldn’t recommend this Backstreet Academy experience enough, it exceeded our expectations completely and we have no idea how it could be so reasonably priced!

DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION ABOUT THE CLASS
Thai cuisine is one of the most well-known and popular food in the world. Thai food ingredients and herbs are also as good as their taste. Sour, sweet, salty, bitter and spicy flavours work together to make each dish come alive.
Here we provide the courses in the morning and evening to suit your availability. The morning course will start the day at a nice local market with our 2 lovely chefs. They will spend time explaining different local foods that the country produces.
Every step of the cooking process will be guided, so all beginners are welcome. The class is held in a beautiful and relaxing house. 6 dishes will be taught, including a stir-fried dish, appetizer, soup, dessert, curry paste, and curry.
Morning course (6 dishes)
9.00 am. - 3.00 pm.
Pick up time:
8.30am. - 8.50am.
Evening course (5 dishes)*
4.00pm. - 8.30pm.
Pick up time:
3.30pm. - 3.50pm.
$24 USD per person
*Stir-fried, appetizer, soup, curry paste, and curry
• Free transportation pick up/drop off within 3 kilometers from Chiangmai downtown.
• Vegetarian or vegans are welcome.
• Cooking station for each person and all food you cook, you can take away.
• Everyone can make fruit shake whenever you want.
• Fresh ingredients from the farm can be used whenever possible.
